2008 CALIFORNIA RACK PERMITTING
CODE CHANGES
There have been substantial changes to the current building and fire codes. These code changes were decided by building plan checkers and officials representing all cities in California. Effective January 1, 2008 the State of California will be recognizing the International Building Code as their official guideline.
Since being notified of the change at the Material Handling Society Meeting on November 29, the Raymond Handling Solutions, Inc. Systems Department has been applying the new codes to project designs and proposals. Changes take effect January 1, 2008.
Listed below are some key code changes that will have direct effect on the materials handling industry. These changes may require quoted but not yet installed rack to be requoted.
STRUCTURAL (BUILDING) CODE CHANGES:
1. A 50% reduced load can no longer be applied for back to back rows- every load condition will be designed as if it were a single row. The result will typically be larger base plates and increased frame gauge/design.
2. Continuous contracted special inspection will be required for all anchor installations.
3. The engineer of record must field verify whether the floor is free of cracks and suitable for anchoring. A signed, wet stamped report of floor approval may be required.
4. Only California certified concrete wedge anchors will be acceptable. Currently, Hilti and Simpson anchors are the only certified manufacturers.
FIRE CODE CHANGES:
5. If there is a demising/ separation wall in the facility, the customer must provide written proof that it is at least a 2 hour rated fire wall.
6. Hose station and pipe drops will not be required for all areas, except L.A. County.
7. In Orange County pallet stops will be required for every pallet position adjacent to the flue space.
8. Draft curtains will only be required for non-sprinklered buildings.
9. In ESFR-equipped buildings, mechanical ventilation may be required.
10. Idle pallets can only be stored in stacks no higher than 6'. Stacks can only be two pallets wide and two stacks deep with an 8' clear perimeter. These stacks must be stored 25' away from any storage rack.
11. In ESFR -equipped buildings, a 6" transverse flue space will be required between pallets stored side by side on rack.
12. The allowable "shelf" consideration of a 4' x 8' area has been reduced to 4' x 5'. This must be considered for wooden deck shelving or racking applications.
